Under Nevada Skies

Blog EntryNASA Plans Visit to an AsteroidMay 16, '08 9:53 AM
for everyone

Who hasn't seen a movie where an asteroid is about to hit the Earth?  Sound far fetched?  Well, it is not.  It is and has been a real concern especially if we don't want to end up like T-Rex.  NASA tracks what are referred to as Near Earth Objects (NEOs) (Scroll to the bottom at the link.)  These are very large rocks people that pass by close to Earth.

If you keep your eye on the news, you occasionally see something about some near misses of space rocks that we didn't even see comingSometimes we can see them and all we can do about it is watch--just like in the movies.  If a big enough one hits the earth, no matter where is lands, it is a problem for you and me and our kids.  And it will happen sometime in the future and we need to be prepared so NASA and others are considering what to do.

Here is a good article:  http://www.space.com/news/061116_asteroid_nasa.html

HEADS UP!

Hopefully.. they will find a viable solution.. to a rather big problem. We MUST get out into space.. and establish long lasting.. self sufficient planetary bases.. throughout our system. There is NO reason that we can't start with the moon.. and learn as we go. sigh. Time to admit.. there are risks in space.. and if an accident happens.. we LEARN.. but GO ON!

I just hope our Gov, spend more money on the space and less on earthy wars.

Two NASA space probes -- Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 -- were the most precisely navigated craft ever launched to the outer planets. Due the so-called Pioneer anomaly. They both fall behind in their projected travel by about 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) every year.

Scores of space scientists and the volunteers supporting the Pioneer Anomaly Project at The Planetary Society, are trying to understand why. A leader in the effort is astrophysicist Slava Turyshev at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Ca, who reported his latest findings at the American Physical Society in April.

Sooner or later I figure we will be hit with an asteroid.
